Distance Matters in Turkey Hunting

Spring Chronicles

Let’s face it: the entire point of chasing stutters is to get close. I like them close, as in, really close. I want to see the panic in his eyes when he hears the safety move into kill mode.

Sometimes, however, it just doesn’t happen. He’s not coming any closer and in that moment, you wonder if your gun has what it takes.

Distance. It’s something I honestly never talk about on camera or in print, because I think far too many hunters take shots outside their range.  I know I did. In the early years I just didn’t understand how critical it was that I knew my gun’s muscle.

Today on Spring Chronicles a tom comes in ultra close, but it doesn’t end up that way. It was quite intense there for a minute while he strutted 18 yards away yet with no shot.
