As the 2018 National Wild Turkey Federation Convention approaches in Nashville, Federal Premium Ammunition (www.federalpremium.com) is once again bringing some of the spring’s most innovative turkey loads to market.
With three springtime turkey loads featuring the FLIGHTCONTROL FLEX wads that bring consistent and tight patterns in both ported and standard choked shotguns, the 2018 loads continue the ammunition maker’s pursuit of better hunting cartridges and shotshells, a journey that began back in 1922.
What’s more, the new Federal Premium turkey loads are also a part of the Anoka, Minn. based company’s continued partnership with the Edgefield, S.C. based NWTF.
As a partner with the NWTF and its Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative, a portion of the purchase price for Federal Premium’s Grand Slam, Heavyweight TSS and 3rd Degree loads will go to the conservation organization as it continues to work to ensure the future of both wild turkeys and hunting for years to come.
Here’s a brief look at each turkey hunting shotshell load, all of which come in a box featuring the NWTF logo:
- Grand Slam – this line features copper-plated shot that is buffered with a clear wad card and a roll crimp. With the FLIGHTCONTROL WAD opening from the rear, the result is a controlled release of the copper-plated lead pellet payload. Add in a new advanced buffering compound that protects the pellets at shot ignition, and the result is a dense, long-range pattern that knocks gobblers down at 40-yards or more.
- Heavyweight TSS – this line is a long-range gobbler getter, even in the new .410 shotshell version. With the combination of the FLIGHTCONTROL WAD and Tungsten Super Shot (TSS) pellets, the result is a tight and deadly pattern through standard and aggressive ported extra-full turkey chokes. While hunters need to consider ethical shot ranges, the shot material of the Heavyweight TSS loads check in with a density that is 56-percent denser than lead. What’s more, Federal Premium says that the significantly higher pellet counts of the #9 pellets bring more penetration energy at 60-yards than lead #5 shot does at 40-yards!
- 3rd Degree – in updating the 3rd Degree turkey load, Federal Premium engineers started with the FLITECONTROL WAD, the cornerstone of the company’s current turkey load lineup. Add in a mixture of 40-percent #7 Heavyweight TSS shot, 40-percent #5 Premium copper-plated lead, and 20-percent #6 FLITESTOPPER lead, and the result is a wicked pattern that performs well downrange as well as being forgiving up close and personal when a gobbler suddenly waltzes into surprisingly close range.
If the performance characteristics of each of these Federal Premium Ammunition turkey hunting loads aren’t enough of a lure, the fact that wherever they are purchased, they are working to positively impact the NWTF’s ongoing vital work of safeguarding both the wild turkey and the pastime of hunting should help to seal the deal for most hunters.
What’s more, all of these turkey hunting loads from Federal Premium feature improved shotshell hull printing, including a small tape measure “Spur Tape” graphic printed in 1/8-inch increments on the hull. In today’s social media and texting savvy world, a springtime hunter can quickly snap a photo in the field and start telling his or her friends about a gobbler’s spur and beard length measurements – with a selfie to back it all up!
All three of these Federal Premium Ammunition turkey hunting loads will be on display at the 42nd annual NWTF Convention and Sport Show in Nashville at the Federal Premium Ammunition booth (No. 1113). According to the NWTF, each product will also be available for purchase at the convention’s official Turkey Shoppe.
Editor’s Note: When the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded in 1973, there were about 1.3 million wild turkeys in North America. After decades of work, that number hit a historic high of almost 7 million turkeys. To succeed, the NWTF notes that it stood behind science-based conservation and hunters’ rights.
With that backdrop, the NWTF’s current Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative is a charge that mobilizes science, fundraising, and devoted organizational volunteers in an effort to raise $1.2 billion to conserve and enhance more than 4 million acres of essential wildlife habitat, recruit at least 1.5 million hunters, and open access to 500,000 acres for hunting.
