On This Week's Episode:
Seeing new ground from the rafts is part of this Alaskan hunt, but to see over 40 river miles in three days without setting camp wasn’t part of the plan. Finding the perfect spot to camp and call is a challenge, and several locations had either one or the other. Either the spot had calm waters and poor hunting opportunities or white water and good hunting opportunities. Part of the hunting style is calling from camp, and if you can’t hear a responding bull’s grunt over the river’s white water, it defeats the purpose. Spot after spot is looked over, but the guys end up boarding their rafts time and time again. On day three of the river movement, a hunting camp is desperately needed to boost moralle of the crew as well as continue the goal of downing a giant bull. Frustration boils over as the brothers admit for the first time they aren’t sure what to do. Being an unguided hunt and unfamiliar with the territory, there is no immediate answer. The guys continue to push down river with the East Fork of the Chandelar staring them in the face. It’s believed they are only 4 miles from the confluence and with darkness imminent, they finally find a place to set camp. Exhausted and starving, the brothers have barely enough energy to set camp. The last of the caribou is cut off the bone and pressure mounts to kill a bull...for food. A tarp is built by the fire so the brothers can call outside without getting wet. The guys talk about the latest personal thoughts in the video journal. In am Chris calls and explores the area around camp. In early afternoon Casey spots a giant moose coming to the calling across the river and chaos ensues as Chris attemps to get into position to shoot.

Publisher Blair Wickstrom will be fishing and camping with personal friends Kent Hughes and Mike Miller in the Everglades National Park. There’s lodging in Chokoloskee, Everglades City and to the South right outside Flamingo in Homestead, but there’s no better way to see the Everglades than to camp there. The prime camping months are mid-November to the end of March. Outside of these three to four months you want to be off the water and in your car when the sun goes down. Once you begin to explore the countless mangrove islands, some claim 10,000, and begin casting to likely fish holding creek mouths, oyster bars and mangrove shorelines you’ll want to spend as much time on the water, as opposed to running back to a hotel as well. For complete information on camping and fishing the Everglades National Park, including information on techniques, species, as well as guides and accommodations, visit www.floridasportsman.com, and check the South Region page.
