TWO BROTHERS IN A QUEST FOR THE LEGACY OF THEIR GREAT UNCLE, A MAN WHO WAS ONCE SPIRALING DOWNWARD INTO THE TRAGIC DEPTHS OF ADDICTION BUT THEN FOUND HIS LIFE’S PASSION AND TRANSFORMED HIMSELF AS WELL AS AN ENTIRE SPORT.
This is a film about a man who was the epitome of the word “sportsman.” Not just in the traditional sense of a man engaged in a particular sport, but also as Webster’s dictionary phrases it, “a person who is fair, generous, a good loser and a gracious winner.” Joe Brooks was a man who rose to life’s challenges and understood the value of never accepting the status quo. He pioneered his profession and passion like few have in any field of endeavor.
This is a story that takes place in the somewhat narrow world of the sport of fly fishing, but at its heart is a universal tale of passion, endurance, overcoming and a commitment to something greater than one’s self.
Michael and Joe Brooks — the great-nephews of the late Joe Brooks —developed the original idea for making this film on a river in New Zealand. Both Michael and Joe are avid and accomplished fly fishers. They have known for a long time about their uncle’s iconic stature in the fly-fishing and sporting world. But they were surprised to learn that his story has never fully been told. As they began researching the story they realized what a powerful impact their great-uncle had on the sport. They also began to realize that his story transcended the world of fly fishing. The Joe Brooks Story will inspire anyone to pursue his or her dreams with passion, and uncompromising excellence and values.
